The Gloriette

Enjoy the view from one of Vienna’s most beautiful locations – the Gloriette. Built in 1775 under the reign of Empress Maria Theresia in the gardens of Schönbrunn Palace, it was ment to be a ‘temple of glory’ and probably also as view point. In 1780, it was equipped with glass windows for the first time and became a location for dinner and festivities. Emperor Franz Josef I. used it as breakfast room. What a start into the day!

The dining room was used as such until the end of the monarchy. In 1945 the East Wing was destroyed by bombing. From 1947 to 1950 it was rebuilt and in 1995 essential restorations work was done. Since this time it is the home of one of Austria’s most beautiful Cafés – The Café Gloriette.
